Why Sigma Nu?

  • Sigma Nu is the only college fraternity that was founded against hazing

Sigma Nu was founded in strict opposition to hazing as our three founders began a movement to completely abolish the hazing system at VMI. Their efforts climaxed on a moonlit October night in 1868, presumably following Bible study at the superintendent's home, when the three met at a limestone outcropping on the edge of the VMI parade ground. Hopkins, Quarles and Riley clasped hands on the Bible and gave their solemn pledge to form a brotherhood of a new society they called the Legion of Honor. The vows taken by these three Founders bound them together to oppose hazing at VMI and encouraged the application of the Principle of Honor in all their relationships. Today, Sigma Nu has remained committed to it's founding principle of firm opposition to hazing.

  • The first "Honor" Fraternity

Our Founders at Virginia Military Institute lived by a code of honor. The Honor system at VMI required each cadet to conform to the duty imposed by his conscience that each act be governed by a high sense of Honor. We are the first fraternity to be founded upon this honor principle. When lived out in the bonds of fraternal brotherhood, the honor principle brings a level of integrity and excellence that is uncommon in a world of relative truth.

  • Lifelong Brotherhood

Sigma Nu is, first and above all, a brotherhood. The friendships and memories we form here will last a lifetime. Fraternity, for us, is all about supporting one another, and working together to build a far richer college experience than any would have otherwise. Furthermore, Sigma Nu is not just four years, it’s for life.

  • Developing Ethical Leadership

In alignment with Sigma Nu's continuing efforts "To develop ethical leaders..." we offer the LEAD Program as a tool to assist our membership in both gaining the knowledge and developing the skills and abilities needed to be an effective and ethical leader for life. An acronym for Leadership, Ethics, Achievement, and Development, the LEAD Program is a comprehensive ethical leadership development program designed to ensure participants "learn by doing."

With five different phases, each includes a unique curriculum. Phases within the program have been designed to coincide with each member's year in school and level of individual development - Phase I for Candidates, Phase II for second year members (Sophomores), Phase III for third year members (Juniors), Phase IV for members preparing to graduate (Seniors), and All-Chapter for the entire membership.
